ELECTRONIC
CARBURETOR
INJECTION

Imagine going out to your 1969 Camaro with its carbureted 350 early on a Saturday morning before your local vehicles and morning beverage meet. You hop in and flip the ignition over and the engine roars to life without as much as a hiccup in the process. To most of you out there, this is a dream come true - no priming, no choke, no flooding.

Traditionally, the only answer to easy cold starts was switching to an aftermarket electronic fuel injection system. But these systems can cost thousands of dollars, be a hassle to install, and be difficult to tune. Well, now there is another solution that can be installed in your driveway in a matter of hours, not days, and after setting 5 simple parameters, can tune itself.

What is ECI?

K&N Electronic Carburetor Injection (ECI)

The K&N Electronic Carburetor Injection, or ECI, is a bolt-on system that adds a supplemental fuel source to your engine. The system consists of a carb spacer plate with a fuel block and injector, an ECU, and a wide band O2 sensor. The plate has a provision for the fuel injector. When needed, the injector squirts atomized fuel into the air stream passing through the spacer plate.

In a way, the ECI system works like an EFI system that reads the air/fuel ratio fed to it from an included O2 sensor that you install in your exhaust. Where this differs from EFI, is that it is used in conjunction with the carburetor. Any time the system detects a lean condition, the injector will kick on to bring the AFR back to spec, but the engine is still fed primarily by the carb. The ECI acts as a supplement to your existing carburated setup, rather than a complete replacement system such as EFI or TBI.

The brain of the ECI system is the ECU. This constantly reads input from the included O2 sensor and monitors the air/fuel ratio. You just answer a few simple questions and set parameters for the system to follow. One of those parameters is AFR. If the system detects an AFR higher than the user-defined limit, the weatherproof ECU tells the injector to fire.

Whereas electronic fuel injection requires 3D mapping software and the ability to tune a vehicle, K&N’s ECI only requires a laptop to answer a few simple questions to get it running smoothly. However, if desired, the user can dive deeper into the ECU and set more parameters for the system to follow. Some of these include injector pulse width, shot volume, progressive injector firing, and minimum/maximum RPM range in which to operate. This makes the K&N ECI extremely versatile and allows as much or as little customization as you want.

K&N Electronic Carburetor Injection (ECI) Installed

K&N’s Electronic Carburetor Injection is very easy to install and can be done in a matter of hours, not days like some EFI kits. The three major components are the spacer plate with injector, the ECU with wiring harness, and the wideband O2 sensor. While some EFI kits require a new fuel pump, reservoir tank, and return fuel line, the ECI includes virtually everything you will need for it to function. All you need to add is a second fuel line to feed the injector. The install can be accomplished in your driveway with common hand tools.

Some people love the process of tuning a carburetor and dialing in the fuel curve. However, even a well tuned carb goes through ups and downs throughout the RPM range. The ECI will smooth out this curve even with a well-tuned carb. Still others have invested into their carbureted setup and don’t want to scrap it and start over with a full EFI setup. If either of these situations apply to you, ECI is your answer!

High horsepower engines naturally require higher fuel flow rates to run efficiently. K&N’s ECI is the answer that owners of these vehicles have been looking for. ECI can help where your carb falls flat. Whether it is at the strip, on the street, or on the road course, if you experience hesitation or power delays with your carburetor, K&N’s ECI will feed your engine that additional fuel it is lacking.

If you are running Holley’s Dominator carb, your engine likely falls into the category of higher fuel flow rates. K&N knows this and with the ECI system for Dominator carbs, K&N includes a second fuel injector and fuel block that can be mounted on the opposite side of the spacer plate. The wiring harness also includes a provision for a second injector, so installation is still a breeze.

Is ECI for You?

Classic Muscle

Classic Muscle

If you are into classic muscle cars but are tired of the headaches associated with carburetors, K&N’s ECI system is the perfect choice. It will help with cold starts, mid-range hesitation, elevation and temperature changes, and much more. No need to go with a full EFI system, try K&N’s ECI out.

Drag Racing

Drag Racing

Drag racers will see marked improvements with K&N’s ECI over their carburetor fed engines. Carburetors can be finicky and be all over the place down the track from fat to lean. The K&N ECI system prevents those conditions by adding fuel to prevent the engine from running lean.

Crate Engines

Crate Engines

Did you just drop a crate engine into your car and want to stick with the carburetor look but can’t stand the associated problems? K&N’s ECI will give your crate engine the look and feel of a carburetor-fed engine without the hassle. Try it out and see for yourself.

Marine

Marine

Do you have a runabout with a carbureted V6 or even twin V8s in a go-fast boat and have to battle through carb issues every time you take it out? If you don’t want to mess with EFI but are sick of carbs, K&N’s ECI is the answer!

Electronic Carburetor Injection Versus Electronic Fuel Injection?

Carburetor, EFI and K&N ECI Comparison Chart

When comparing K&N’s Electronic Carburetor Injection to a full electronic fuel injection system, the benefits of ECI are clear. While there are benefits to an EFI or TBI system, K&N ECI is a less expensive and simpler choice for anyone who is looking to spend more time enjoying their carbureted car, and less time working on it.

Thanks to its supplemental and adaptive design, the K&N ECI system is the perfect middle ground between a straight carburetor and a full EFI system. Whether you have a Holley 4150, Holley Dominator, or Quadrajet style carburetor, the K&N ECI system will solve the fuel delivery issues you may be experiencing.

Frequently Asked Questions

The K&N® ECI is designed to operate as a supplemental fuel system to reduce inefficiencies in a mechanical carburetor, and spruce it up with some electronic advantages.

No. The ECI is designed to be used as a supplemental fuel source in conjunction with your existing hardware.

The kit includes a one-inch anodized aluminum spacer plate with attached fuel injector rail, a weld-in oxygen sensor bung, mounting hardware, an injection-molded weatherproof ECU, a wide-band oxygen sensor, and a wiring harness.

4150 Holley style carburetors, 4500 Holley style carburetors, and Quadrajet carburetors.

No, the ECI system can be used with both old and new carburetors.

Yes. The bung comes pre-packaged in the kit, and has to be welded into the exhaust. Clamp-on solutions are in development, and may eventually be offered as an accessory or as part of an updated kit.

We’ve tested the ECI as low as 6 psi, and as high as 25 psi.

No. You can tie off from your mechanical fuel pump if needed.

The spacer height is designed to be as minimal as possible, and adds only one inch of height. If you do have hood clearance issues and you’re using a K&N air filter, we do offer drop base air filters that can help maximize space.

Absolutely. Depending on your application, you may have to make some adjustments to your injector size. The ECI interface allows you to select the fuel that you’re running through a drop-down menu, and provides pre-set AFR options that you can adjust if needed.

The system is already pre-programmed with set points for the AFR depending on the type of fuel you’re running—gas, methanol, or ethanol—and you can customize your own AFR if you wish.

Absolutely—we think this is going to be a popular application for the ECI, though you may have to make some adjustments to your injector capacity.

Yes. The ECI is designed to only help when the engine is lean—you set the parameters of the AFR, and any time that the air/fuel ratio goes above that reading, the ECI then injects fuel. If the AFR is constantly below that reading, the injector will not fire.
